What century is this?

There are so many shades of wrong on this list; the fact that there is a list at all; the fact that I've read/owned most of these books... it's a rainbow of stupidity, really.

It makes me.... grrrrrr!!!!!

Wow... just wow.

I remember reading some of these in school as class assignments... Lord of the Flies?  Standard curiculum.  Some of these works are masterpieces!

The Harry Potter series as being objectionable? #1 on the list?  My god, I praise JKR for that series for no other reason then getting todays youth excited about reading!  What is so objectionable in there?  The whole Muggle/Mud-Blood racial slurs?  Hatred exists in this world, and at least these books take on the stance that it is wrong!

edit - Just noticed that a Nobel Peace Prize author is listed on there too! Maya Angelou!

so wrong.

Bill Hicks can summarize this for you.

Quote from: "Bill Hicks"

I was in Fyffe, Alabama last year. After the show, I went to a Waffle House. I'm not proud of it, I was hungry. And I'm eating, I'm alone and I'm reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me:

"Hey, what you readin' for?"

Is that like the weirdest fucking question you've ever heard? Not what am I reading, but what am I reading for.

"Well, God damn it, you stumped me. Why do I read? Hm I guess I read for a lot of reasons, and the main one is so I don't end up being a fucking waffle waitress."

But then, this trucker in the next booth gets up, stands over me and goes:
"Well, looks like we got ourselves a reader."

"What the fuck's going on here? It's not like I walked into a Klan rally in a Boy George outfit, God damn it. It's a book!"

The Giver?  The Giver?  OMFG!

That is a list that I would WANT my son to read.

Hell, I read Captn. Underpants to my son when he was in like 3rd grade.

Welcome to the new Dark Ages!!  Be sure to bring your kerosine for Friday night witch burnings!

Don't you know that reading things that teach you to think on your own or wrestle with moral and social issues is wrong!!!

Bill Hicks can summarize just about anything.  His collected transcripts should be required reading.

Hate to say it, but there's an embarrassing number of books on that list I haven't read.

The Outsiders, The Giver, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies and a couple more.  I think I either need to hit a bookstore or raid some bookshelves of people who would be likely to have 'em.

Brave New World is definitely worth a read. It's a pretty short one as I recall.
